By Board Rule, all licensees are required to complete forty (40) hours of continuing medical education courses during the two (2) calendar years (January 1 – December 31) preceding their licensure renewal year. At least one (1) of the forty (40) required hours shall be a course specifically designed to address prescribing practices.
Effective July 1, 2014, all prescribers who hold a current federal drug enforcement administration (DEA) license and who prescribe controlled substances shall be required to complete a minimum of two (2) hours of continuing education related to controlled substance prescribing. Accordingly, these licensees who are scheduled to renew in 2015 must complete two (2) hours of continuing medical education in controlled substance prescribing by December 31, 2014. Some exceptions apply.
Failure to comply with continuing education requirements may result in disciplinary action against the licensee or registrant. The disciplinary action will be reported on the Department of Health license verification web site.
By signing the renewal application form, licensees affirm that they have met this requirement. The Department of Health will be auditing licensees to determine and confirm compliance.
